Casewrap

Casewrap or “Casewrap Laminate” is the cover style of modern hardcover books. A decorative laminate in gloss or matte finish is wrapped around and glued to a thick book board. Attractive as well as durable, casewrap hardcovers are generally full-color and dually serves as an advertisement for the book.

D.P.I.

“Dots per inch”, which is the quality of a home printer’s resolution, not to be confused with “PPI”.

Hardcover

Highly durable book type, where the book block is glued or sewn to a hard outer cover. Covers come in a variety of coatings, including cloth, shiny gloss, or matte finish. Some hardcover books may have an outer dust jacket that wraps around the cover.

Interior

The inside pages of a book, as opposed to the outside cover. Not only is it the body of your book, but the interior design also follows certain formats.

P.P.I.

“Pixels per inch”. The visual quality or definition used for digital graphics. Since publishing is digitally-based, this is the more accurate measurement used, as opposed to a home printer’s measurement of DPI, or “dots per inch”.

Paper Weight

The thickness or quality of paper used for a book’s interior pages. Paper is measured in pounds per ream (500 sheets) of standard-sized sheets of paper measuring 17 x 22″, which is later cut into quarters to produce “letter-size”. Paperback

Common book style due to its cheap cost to make. A heavy paperboard cover is cut to the exact page trim size of the interior pages, which are then glued to the spine.
