When a book has pictures that run beyond the page, it is said to have “bleed”. The ink goes beyond the area that gets trimmed off, giving a nice visual effect. This is necessary so that no chance of a white border occurs at the edge of the paper. All covers have bleed, but bleed can be used for interior book pages, especially for children’s picture books or fancy art or photography books.
